Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by a number of deficits in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction with others, and other behaviors. Usually diagnosed in early infancy, this disorder is the most impairing and severe of the neurodevelopmental disorders. Before the publishing and release of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), Autism Spectrum disorder could be diagnosed be into three subtypes: Autistic Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and Asperger’s Syndrome; however, the DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, as cited in Butcher, Hooley Mineka, 2014, p.528) has taken these subtypes and†¦show more content†¦Perhaps the most alarming are the deficits in the building of personal relationships with others. A child with Autism Spectrum Disorder does not engage in the normal playing behaviors of most children. They will usuall y have trouble making friends because they do not play with others and do not engage in imaginative play. Many times these children will not even have an interest in playing with people, but rather with objects or alone. In terms of the second category, restrictive and repetitive behaviors, the child must present two of the four patterns of behavior (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, as cited in Butcher, Hooley Mineka, 2013, p.528). Children and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder live their lives in a repetitive fashion and like to keep things the same. This can be presented by something as simple as eating the same food every day or walking and/or riding the bus the same route to school. If this â€Å"sameness† is disrupted in any way, this can cause an excessive amount of distress. Apart from the need for repetition, these individuals have a strong fixation with certain objects or hobbies. For example, an individual with Autism may have an obsession with cell phones and will proceed to grab the cell phone of strangers in order to feed the urge of their fixation.
